Environment Groups Gain A Strategic Victory

Environmental groups involved in the protection of
Lake Tahoe won a major victory when the judge sided
with them and blocked the construction of thousands of
homes north of Lake Tahoe. He also said that the
county's plan for the Martis Valley violated the
Californian Environmental Law. The environmental
groups had filed a lawsuit in Jan'2004 saying the
community's plans to construct the homes did not take
into account the impact on the wildlife, water, and
air quality.

The Placer County's had planned to construct 6000
homes in the valley southeast of Truckee, California.
The judge's orders means henceforth all activities
under the 2003 Martis Valley Community Plan will be
suspended.

The judge said that project had built-in opportunities
create environmental mischief. "Of particular concern
is the impact which the project will have upon traffic
and air quality impacts within the Tahoe Basin," he
wrote.
